SULAIMANI – About fifteen kilograms of narcotics were confiscated from the possession of a drug trafficking ring in an operation by the security forces in the Kurdistan Region’s Erbil on Monday (July 12), an anti-drug department said.
The narcotics were crystal Methamphetamine and two suspects with initials, R.N.T and K.B.M., were arrested,
the Drug Control Directorate, which is part of Erbil General Asayish Directorate.
The suspects intended to export the narcotics, it added, noting they have been detained in accordance with Article 25 of the anti-drug law.
Drug research experts and official are wary of a rise in drug trafficking and use in the Kurdistan Region.
Over 200 kilograms of narcotics were seized and
881 suspects were apprehended on illegal drug use and trafficking by the security forces in Erbil in the first half of 2021.
Over half a ton of drugs were confiscated throughout 2020 and 1,133 suspects were arrested on drug-related charges, according to the Kurdistan Region’s General Narcotics Control Directorate.
Due to its nearness to neighboring Iran, the Kurdistan Region has largely become a transit route for narcotics and illicit drugs coming from Iran and central Asia to Europe, with limited but growing domestic consumption.
